THE GLADE: OUTDOOR BOOKSTORE/LIBRARY AND WALKING TRAIL

The Glade is a walking trail with an outdoor bookstore, library, art installation, and reading corner along the trail. Each team member designed a parklet within the walking trail and mine was called "Story Grove". This space serves as a children's read-a-loud area where parents can join their kids in fostering their love for stories and books. Read-a-loud sessions are led by the "Story-keepers of the Forests" (park staff member), conducted on a schedule each day. Children of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate in listening to sage stories while being in nature and reconnecting with the earth.

BEYOND THE PAGES: ESCAPE ROOM

Beyond the Pages is an escape room where a library unravels into storybook worlds as nature reclaims the space. The objective of the escape rooms is to find a way out of the fairy tale woods and back into the library (real world). Room one, designed by Max Smith, was Narnia themed. The players had to solve a puzzle for a code to unlock the wardrobe that leads into the next room. Room two, designed by Abbie Ramirez, was Alice in Wonderland themed. The players had to solve a puzzle to gain access to a potion that allowed them to fit in the doorway and move on to the next room. Room three, designed by Kristen Watson, was Hansel and Gretel themed. The players had to figure out the witch's recipe to escape before she got home. The final room, designed by me, was Snow White themed. The players had to unlock Snow White's casket and wake her up to escape the forest.

SNOW WHITE ROOM
Setting: in the middle of the enchanted forest, mournful eerie atmosphere, evening

Objective: players must solve a riddle written on Snow White's tombstone and a puzzle with her casket to figure out the code to unlock her casket and wake her up, after waking up, Snow white will sing a tune that the players have to play on an instrument correctly to escape the forest

PUZZLE PROTOTYPE

Objects in scene: locked casket, "apples" of different colors in the coffin, bee magnet, flowers, tombstone, trees

Riddle:

Here lies Snow White, fairest of them all,
A beauty cursed by envy’s thrall.
Crimson dripped where poison kissed
Yet true love still persists.
Seek first the bee, whose gentle hum,
Reveals the key for what’s to come.

How to Solve the Prototype Puzzle:

  1. Find the bee magnet within the flowers in the forest.

  2. Use the magnet to find the bad apples in her casket and remove them through the holes on the sides.

  3. Count how many of each color apples there are and match that to the puzzle. Envy=green: 5, crimson=red: 7, true love=pink: 2; (orange is red herring)

  4. Put the numbers into the lock and open her casket

FINAL PUZZLE
Objects in scene: locked casket, "apples" of different colors in the casket, gold button inside casket, bird magnet, flowers, tombstone, trees, mini keyboard

Riddle:

Here lies Snow White, fairest of them all,
A beauty cursed by envy’s thrall.
Crimson dripped where poison kissed
Yet true love still persists.
Seek twins, whose gentle flight

Will bring the morn to endless night.

Hear her song when she awakes,

For in her voice, the curse shall break.

How to Solve the Prototype Puzzle:

  1. Find the two bird magnets within the flowers in the forest.

  2. Use the magnet to find the bad apples in her casket and remove them through the holes on the sides.

  3. Count how many of each color apples there are and match that to the puzzle.

  4. Put the numbers into the lock and open her casket

  5. Press the golden button to hear the notes (ideally she would be a doll that has a speaker but that was out of budget)

  6. Find the keyboard at the back of the room to plunk out the notes to escape the room

THE WOODLAND ARCHIVE

THEMED EXPERIENCE PRODUCTION & 3D ENVIRONTMENTAL DESIGN

Designers: Kaylyne Pham, Abbie Ramirez, Max Smith, Kristen Watson

"Nestled deep within the mystical Olympic National Forest, this literary sanctuary offers refuge to those who seek communion with Mother Earth and the stories she holds. Here, books are not merely shared, they are revered for their profound connection to the natural world and the invisible threads that bind humanity together. Sustained by community, thoughtful exchange, and a reverent harmony with nature, this space is both a haven for the mind and a sanctuary for the soul."

Woodland Archive is a woodland themed bookstore and community library experience park, developed as a collaborative design project exploring how environmental storytelling can transform a traditional bookstore into an immersive, location-based experience. Rooted in themes of sustainability, community exchange, and connection to the natural world, the project was tasked with creating a cohesive narrative space that encourages engagement with literature.

Featuring an outdoor bookstore/library and walking trail, a fairy tale themed escape room, and a genre inspired indoor cafe and bookstore, I contributed to the development of this immersive environment by designing one section within each of the the three areas of the experience; all unified under a shared woodland narrative and visual language. I created models and wayfinding signage in Sketchup and conducted micro-pilots of the space in real life to test the feasibility and enjoyment of the the experience. I also collaborated closely with the group to ensure consistency across all designed components while maintaining alignment with the overarching concept.

The final outcome was a fully integrated experiential environment that demonstrated how narrative-driven spatial design can foster community and connection between people, stories, and nature.

NOVEL GROUNDS: GENRE-THEMED CAFE & BOOKSTORE

When entering the cafe, guests have the option to go to the center bar first and choose a drink/menu item that will lead them specific section of the cafe based on the genre of the menu item. The second option is to go to the section first and then come to the bar with a book from that section. The book will match to a specific menu item that they can order
